Yes, extremely helpful and giving. People gave me rides to airports, tours around their city, and cooked me meals! Also I only slept on couches in Portland, the rest of the time I had futons and beds and often my own room. It is fun just to meet up with people for a coffee or walk and learn about the local area and hear stories. There are also online groups to join…like design, whatever your interest. Good luck!
